Pictured:A group of several hundred automated mirrors in a grid direct sunlight to a central receiver tower. The robotic mirrors are powered by the photovoltaic array.
Welcome to the Open-Source Heliostat Array Project! We are developing all of the technologies needed to construct a small solar power-tower heat source, and then publishing them into the Creative Commons. The project is broken into four key publications: Motor, Heliostat Mirror Machine, Controller Electronics, and Software for tracking the sun.
Pictured: A prototype miniature heliostat uses two motors to move a single shatter-resistant mirror.
Each document gives step-by-step instructions for building simple embodiments of the technology. Readers are encouraged to adopt, adapt, and to re-publish their own versions, in accordance to the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License.
Pictured: A completed weatherized stepping gearmotor, as detailed in publication #1 below. These motors will be used to drive the mirrors.
*We are pleased to announce the release of our first publication: The OSP-M1 weatherized stepping gearmotor, which will become the workhorse for our miniature heliostats. Download the publication below and build your own. (There are also assembled motors for sale below, in case you want one or several hundred to experiment with!)
